Head injuries are one of the most serious and urgent events that occur in sports and require immediate, thorough assessment and rehabilitation by Physicians, Physical Therapists, and Athletic Trainers before safely returning to sport. If you have experienced a head injury, seek medical help immediately.

Concussions are induced by either direct impact to the head, face, neck, or a force elsewhere in the body that is transmitted to the head. The typical sign of a concussion is the rapid onset of neurological impairment that quickly resolves, however, some symptoms may resolve over minutes to hours, and some may require immediate 911 communication, making initial assessment so important. I urge all trainers, coaches, parents, and athletes to familiarize and educate themselves on the signs, symptoms, and immediate steps to take following a suspected head injury.

Doctors of Physical Therapy can play a vital role in the rehabilitation process following a concussion. After being evaluated by your Physician, early initiation of Physical Therapy can reduce the likelihood of developing Post Concussions Syndrome, help reduce severity of acute symptoms, decrease length of time that you spend on the sideline, minimize loss of physical fitness, and most importantly, facilitate the safe return to sport.

A Doctor of Physical Therapy can help by:

  • Implementing activity modifications to optimize rest and recovery
  • Reducing severity of Headaches
  • Restoring strength and endurance
  • Decreasing dizziness
  • Improving Balance
  • Facilitating return to normal activity or sport

After visiting with your Physician, schedule an evaluation with one of our Doctors of Physical Therapy to get you back on track to meeting your goals!
