“Let your food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.”
-Hippocrates
It is estimated that 1 in 4 people struggle with functional gastrointestinal symptoms, including reflux, diarrhea, constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, bloating, and increased flatulence. Imagine if you could start improving digestive symptoms naturally through food. This morning I made a delicious smoothie all centered around GUT health.
Here is what I put in my smoothie and WHY:
TigerNut flour
TigerNut flour is derived from an African root vegetable and not only is it dairy free, gluten free, nut free, soy free, and everything else free, it is a powerful prebiotic. Prebiotics are resistant starches that feed the good bacteria in your gut. Since it is high in fiber it also helps stabilize blood sugar, promote healthy gut motility, and helps you feel full longer. Make sure to drink the smoothie as soon as you make it because the fiber will cause it to thicken quickly. Check out one of my previous blogs for more information on TigerNuts.
Pineapple
Pineapple is rich in bromelain, an enzyme that helps digest protein. It has been shown to help with digestive health, nutrient absorption, reduce inflammation and help with allergies and healing.
Greek Yogurt (Full Fat)
For those of you that don’t have issues with dairy, greek yogurt is rich in protein and low in sugar. It is full of probiotics (the good bacteria for your gut). It will also help make the smoothie creamier and delicious.
Banana
Not only are bananas great in smoothies because they help with texture, but they are also rich in potassium. Bananas are also another powerful prebiotic food. I love using frozen bananas!
