Katie Compaan, RN, BSN

Nurse

Atlanta

katie-compaan

Katie received her Bachelors of Science in Nursing from Tennessee Tech University in 2011.  Her first nursing position was overseas in Uganda where she spent 2.5 years working with vulnerable populations of mostly women and children.  Katie moved back to the States and began working in a Burn ICU where she worked for 6 years further developing her nursing skills and her love for nursing. While Katie enjoyed working in the hospital she began to see many gaps in patient care and a re-occurring thought she had was “What could we have done differently to prevent this illness?” Katie believes that every patient story is different and the plan of care should be as unique as the patient.  Katie believes that the goal of health is not just the absence of disease, but the capability and energy to live life to it’s fullest.  The more she learns about the functional medicine approach to health and wellness the more she sees this as the new gold standard for healthcare!

Katie loves to hike and camp with her husband Kyle and their pup Lucy. If it’s a nice, sunny day outside and Katie isn’t at work you can probably find her on a trail somewhere!

INTERVIEW WITH KATIE

What are 3 ways you stay healthy with a busy schedule?

  • I try to be outside as much as possible. Even if it’s just working on the computer on my front porch. I start to feel sluggish and sad without enough vitamin D!
  • I try to work out at least 5 days a week, even if it’s a short 20 minute HIIT workout or a run. Im only going to to be as productive as my body allows, and working out clears my mind.
  • I meal prep at the beginning of a busy week so it cuts down on bad food choices when I’m busy and tired.

If you could only eat one cuisine for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?

TACOS TACOS TACOS – because they are amazing and you can make all sorts of different kinds for any meal!

What's your favorite healthy snack?

Avocado mash topped with broccoli sprouts on sprouted grain toast.

Can you share something about yourself we may not know?

I’ve played the drums and other percussion instruments since I was 12!

Do you have a favorite inspirational podcast or book?

I love “How I Built This” with Guy Raz
I find the Narnia books by C.S. Lewis still the most inspiring to date.

What's your all time favorite song to work out to?

“Achy Breaky Heart” Billy Ray Cyrus because in middle school PE class the teacher would always play this while we did calisthenics and it still gets me JAZZED!

Tell us how you first got interested in health and wellness.

I’ve been a nurse for almost 10 years and while working with patients who suffered from heart disease, diabetes, and other preventable diseases I would always think “I wonder how we could have cared for these people differently 20 years ago?”. That’s when I really started to see the major gaps in our healthcare system and a desire to see real change happen in our communities related to long-term health and longevity. I don’t want to just put a bandaid on a patient’s health issues, I want to see people become more whole and able to live life to the fullest possible measure!

What is your spirit animal and why?

A bear because I love to be outside all day, hanging with my friends and eating fun snacks.
